The personal devastation that results when children are removed from their community and forced to attend residential schools in the South is described in language that is graphic and disturbing. Teachers using this novel with their students must carefully consider their community. They may want to secure parental authorization before use.

It may be best suited for literature circles due to the violence described. Though engaging, the escapist nature of the novel may not lend itself to extensive interpretation or analysis.
