SOCAN Agreement

Focused Education has renewed its agreement with the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN). This agreement covers all non-educational uses of music in schools and means that schools will not be required to individually purchase annual “public performance of music” licenses or acquire single-event licenses for most individual events that are not covered under the Copyright Act “educational purposes” exemption.
Additional Information
In the following documents, you’ll find some background on the public performance licensing issue and the Copyright Act, why a SOCAN license is required, some common questions and answers including various music user scenarios as well as specific copyright information. Some, but not all, music performances require copyright permission.
You are encouraged to share these materials with others who are involved with the public performance of live or recorded music at your school.
