These virtual workshops are available to all Focused Education members, and feature presentations by our Professional Learning Team and partners. Learn tips for making the best use of digital resources for classroom instruction. There is something relevant here for all educators from K-12.

On Demand: ProQuest: Old Timey Newspapers for the Digital Age

This session is available on demand at any time.

Investigate a unique resource! ProQuest databases include digital archives of some of BC's major historic (and current) newspapers. But the possibilities are so much more... 

Consider: the historical context of machines; advertising; a STEAM project examining the speed of travel of information in a print-based world.

NFB: More than just great Canadian films!

The National Film Board of Canada has been sharing stories with Canadians for more than 80 years. With a focus on education and providing voice to under-represented communities, the NFB is proud to produce one of the worlds’ largest offers of Indigenous-made film and resources for the classroom. This session will explore CAMPUS, the NFB’s education streaming platform which is available to all BC public schools and many independent schools through the Digital Classroom. 

Be inspired by clips from Canadian filmmakers and learn how the NFB’s documentary and animated storytelling can integrate seamlessly into your courses and engage your students.


IDÉLLO: Introduction for K-8 French Immersion Teachers

IDÉLLO includes over 15,000 French language educational materials: videos, games, websites, applications, and teaching tools. It is provided free to K-8 French Immersion program teachers in school districts, and district French Immersion contacts. 

Join Barbara Franchi Johnson, IDÉLLO facilitator, for an overview of the resource, and learn how to set up your teacher account.


Differentiating the Digital Classroom – Intermediate Focus

All BC teachers and students in public and many independent schools, along with the Yukon, have direct access to the Digital Classroom core collection. (with no login or passwords required from school sites).

Learn about grade specific resources, and Indigenous and French language content. Explore rich functionality; advanced search features, text to speech tools, video content, reading level adjustment, and translation tools.

GALE “InContext” Suite (Canada, Global Issues, Science)

These three databases work well to support the BC curriculum at the grade 8-12 level. We will investigate tips, tricks, Lexile reading level search functions and the “on demand” text and voice translations with the intention of supporting diverse learners in the classroom. 

If you need online resources for the secondary level these three databases provide support most curricular areas in grade 8-12.

TWIG: Supporting Math & Science Grades 6-9

Twig is tailor-made for teachers in Grades 6-9. 

Access a library of three-minute videos for Science, Math and Geography lessons. Access lesson plans, quizzes and diagrams. This resource is easy to use, and quickly integrate into lessons.

See examples of the ways teachers use the resource for classroom/online instruction.

Live it Earth K-7 - Bilingual Suite

The Live It Earth bilingual suite focuses on place-based, hybrid learning experiences. The online resource features cross-curricular projects, informed by Indigenous perspectives. The instructional materials include how-to videos, inquiry guides, slide shows and pro-d materials, and allows for the customization of presentation materials. 

Filter the project resources to see alignment with BC Curriculum. New programs are added annually in French and English. Join Live It Earth's Blue Netherclift in an overview of this Focused Education supported resource.

The Digital Classroom for Teacher-Librarians

This is a Teacher Librarian focused session that will provide an overview of all Digital Classroom Resources.

  • How to use the K-12 Evaluated Resource Collection
  • What to do about Novelist?
  • Curriculum alignment and subject specific opportunities with the use of the Digital Classroom
  • Ideas for promoting the Digital Classroom resources (WB, GALE, TWIG, Live IT, and others) in a Library and School setting
  • Opportunities to share TL perspectives on the use of the Digital Classroom
